The Wrong Accessory

Recently my family and I went to a wedding in a secluded area in California on a private lake. Sound exclusive? Well yes, but not in that way.

It was a lovely weekend retreat, a party of merely 50 guests, log cabins, kayaking, and ‘smores. Really, it was just a step or two up from camping. I am not a camper, but love the couple that were getting married, so I rallied.

Did I mention it was a theme wedding? “Wear something from the 30’s, 40’s or 50’s.” Luckily that’s not asking a lot from my wardrobe. I’ve worn vintage since I was born, starting with my sister’s hand-me-downs from the 60’s.

As we mingled with all the guests, a funny feeling overtook me and my husband. Forty three of the guests were in their mid-twenties to early-thirties, three of the guests were over sixty-two, and then there was us—the ones with kids. Talk about the wrong accessorry.

My daughter was the flower girl, my son performed a song on the ukelele.

After the token “hellos” and the “oh aren’t they cute”, we were discarded. Yep, excluded. Middle age has its benefits, but not in the eyes of 43 of the guests.

I don’t blame them. When I was in my late twenties I did the same thing—offering a cursory smile for the mature types. The only difference now is, my accessories are a hell of a lot more interesting than they were when I was 23.

I hope I did this right. Love the accessories, but I think the accessories you took to the wedding are pretty interesting, too.

    Love,
