My Julien David Shoes Have a Soundtrack

For one full day in New York a few weeks back, I did what might just be my favorite thing in the world to do there: shop.

While my husband spend his day in Central Park, I sprinted the few blocks to the Bergdorf Goodman shoe floor, and then jumped on the Q to roll downtown and hit my favorite Soho spots: Opening Ceremony, If, Maison Martin Margiela, Kirna Zabete, Acne Studios, and then over to Tribeca and Rick Owens.

It was a perfect day.

But it got better.

On the recommendation of Jslow, I cabbed to Murray Hill to hit the Dover Street Market, the New York outpost of Comme Des Garcons founder Rei Kawakubo’s fashion retail and concept store. Their current tagline – “a place where fashion becomes fascinating” couldn’t be more apt. It’s seven floors of heaven. Jslow writes about her experience here – it’s a great read.

And so I spent hours gasping at the textures and colors and sheer beauty of the racks and walls and floors of this magnificent market: Simone Rochas feathered oxfords here, J.W. Anderson origami blouses there, all pieces I’ve lusted after online, unavailable to pick up and try on in woefully under-fashioned San Francisco.

I walked out with three items: Sacai gladiator “birkenstocks”, a long Comme Des Garcons “net” sweater, and the above Julien David color block sandals, ringed with ruffles. I. Love. Them. For some reason, the ruffles remind me of a car wash. And Car Wash happens to be one of my favorite songs from my high-school days. One of my dearest friends, Kelly, bought me that Rose Royce album. And so every time I open the box and put them on, that song blasts through my mind.

And that what fashion is all about. Memories, happiness, discovery, everything.

Do any of your shoes, or favorite pieces, have a soundtrack?

Well Paula, great minds think alike! I bought both sandals too at DSM! That place is heaven! Spend way too much time (and money) there. There is no place even in a shopping wonderland like NYC like it. My girlfriends & I use the restaurant like a clubhouse!

Andrea! That is crazy!!!! Would love to know what you wear the Julien David shoes with (I’ve only had mine a week) and how you wear the Sacai’s. You are so so lucky to live in NYC! Coming back in December — would love to meet you and shop. Have a great weekend.

Just commented on another post of yours, but I’ve meant to answer you here. I am recovering from back surgery so I was out of commission for a few weeks. Yes, keep me posted when you come back in December & we can meet there for sure. You will also love my fashion friends- we are obsessed! And your friend Rhianna J. works there. She’s now on the first floor. See her all the time. A beauty!

I hope your back is okay! I don’t know what I’d do if I couldn’t do yoga, walk, play tennis….shop!

I’d love to meet you and your friends when I come in December — would be so fun to plan a day of sale shopping.
